The enamel badge shown above left is a vintage Daily Express Rupert League badge from the 1930s. I have one of these with JR Gaunt on the back and another with Roden of London, both big enamel badge manufacturers of the time.

Rupert's rivals

From David Lister's Rupert Bear, A History;`

Rupert appeared (and still appears) every day in the British newspaper "The Daily Express". It must be one of the longest running children's cartoons in a newspaper anywhere in the world.

In the 1930s there was a vogue for children's cartoons in British newspapers. Teddy Tail appeared in the Daily Mail and "Pip, Squeak and Wilfred" in the Daily Mirror. The Express decided that they should have their own cartoon.

The badges
Here are the early badges from all three newspaper's children's clubs: I have these badges; two each of the Teddy Tail and Rupert League badges - one made by JR Gaunt and the other by Roden of London. The quality and details differs with manufacturer.
